IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
Dr Frederick Mackellar arrives in Sydney on the Roxburgh Castle in 1839. Mackellar established a medical practice in The Rocks, and by 1851 was living and practicing at 85 George Street, one of the Unwins Stores stone buildings standing today. In 1853-4 he, and neighbour Joseph George Raphael, built a warehouse at the rear of the Stores which today houses the Rocks Discovery Museum. Mackellar's son, Sir Charles, was born in The Rocks in 1844 and served as a Member of Parliament from 1885-1925. His granddaughter Dorothea Mackellar, was a well-know Australian poet in the first half of the 20th century and wrote the evocative 'My Country' in 1908.
