IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
In 1804 Governor King laid the foundation of Fort Phillip, atop Observatory Hill.
Built to protect the Loyalists in case of Irish convict uprising, the fort was, in fact, never finished.
It served as a gunpowder store in the 1820s, and a signal station from 1825.
The three walls visible today, surrounding the Observatory, appear to be the extent of the works.
