IT HAPPENED THIS WEEK:
William Bede Dalley born in 1831 at 117 George Street, the son of former convicts. Dalley was articled to Rocks solicitor and landowner Frederick Unwin in 1853, and was himself admitted to the Bar in 1856. Dalley represented his childhood friend from the Rocks, bushranger Frank Gardiner, at his trial in 1864. In 1872, Dalley petitioned the Governor, resulting in Gardiner's release from gaol and a sentence of banishment (he ended his days in San Francisco). Dalley served a number of public offices, including Attorney General for NSW. He was a leading political figure in NSW politics from 1856-1888. He died in 1888 and a bronze statue was erected in his honour in Hyde Park.
