Taste the world’s best Shiraz from Barossa winery Chateau Tanunda’s boutique cellar door in The Rocks.
Established in 1890, Chateau Tanunda was the birthplace of winemaking in the Barossa Valley. Today, their wines are a pure expression of this unique part of the world, with grapes typically handpicked, unfiltered and vinted with minimal intervention to let their true character shine.
Their unique winemaking philosophy is clearly working - Chateau Tanunda is considered one of Australia’s leading wineries and their Everest Shiraz has been awarded the title of best Shiraz in the world several times.
And the best part? You no longer have to leave Sydney to try their award winning Barossa wines fresh from the barrel. Chateau Tanunda is opening a boutique cellar door in the heart of The Rocks, serving exclusive tastings of their most sought after wines. Drop in soon, taste a few and take a bottle (or six) home for later.

Q&A with Michelle Geber, Managing Director Château Tanunda
What has inspired Château Tanunda to launch a tasting room in Sydney?
The Château Tanunda signage hanging at the entrance to St James Station at Hyde Park was the inspiration to open a tasting room in Sydney. The almost century-old sign has been a fixture since World War II soldiers walked down the stairs of St James Station to embark on trains as they headed off to war. So we have a historical connection to Sydney, with the sign now heritage listed. Sydney is part of our DNA.
Now, with the pandemic causing intermittent state border closures, it's perfect timing to bring the Barossa to Sydney, where so many of our most loyal Château Tanunda customers live.
Why was The Rocks the chosen location?
The building is as historic as the Château itself. The cellar door will be housed in a beautiful Sydney sandstone two-storey premise, built in 1861 in the narrow pedestrian streets of Nurse's Walk, allowing us to add to a footprint that's three centuries old.
What type of atmosphere and environment will the tasting room deliver?
The atmosphere will be similar to that of our cellar door in The Barossa, as we showcase our "Old Vine Expression" 50 / 100 / 150 year-old wines made from some of the oldest vines in the world. Imagine a genuine cellar atmosphere like you would find in the old world – intriguing and authentic.
The Barossa has a historic wine pedigree that spans 160 years. Visitors to our cellar door at The Rocks will be treated to wines made from grapes born from vines that are among the oldest in the world – truly some of the finest wines anywhere.
