
Every Saturday and Sunday, The Rocks Markets transform into a vibrant celebration of creativity and originality. Talented designers, artisans and musicians come together in Sydney’s most historic precinct.
The Music Maker Program is a core part of the Music and Entertainment pillar of the Markets, offering a platform for busking musicians to showcase their talent. With a focus on original music, this program is an exciting opportunity for musicians to perform in a unique, supportive environment.
Program Details
- Performance Times: Musicians will perform three 45-minute sets between, 10am – 1pm or 1.30pm – 4.30pm.
- Merchandise: Musicians are allowed to sell recordings of their original music and advertise the sale of CDs or DVDs using an A4 sign (to be displayed in a stand provided by PMNSW). The sale of other items or recordings by other performers is prohibited.
- Gratuities: Musicians may receive a monetary appreciation from the audience for their performance but may not solicit funds in a way that is likely to cause any discomfort to any individual, nor is the monetary amount of a gratuity to be suggested.

Application Process
We invite musicians to register their interest via an EOI. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, with the program curated quarterly. Each quarter, a select group of musicians will be chosen to rotate through the available sets over a three-month period.
To apply, musicians will need to provide:
- A current Public Liability Insurance Certificate ($10M minimum, with Property NSW listed as an interested party).
- Proof of identification (applicants must be over 18 years of age).
- A recent standard-size headshot.
- Links to social media profiles or websites.
- Examples of music (video preferred – vimeo/youtube/Instagram – no tik tok) that reflect what will be performed.
- A brief statement about your music and why you’d like to perform at The Rocks Markets, including a short bio. (note: Some of this information may be used by our Marketing Department if your application is successful)
Applications will be reviewed by The Rocks Markets team. Successful applicants will demonstrate:
- Strong original content.
- Suitability for the Markets’ family-friendly atmosphere.
- An ability to entertain without disrupting neighbouring traders.
- Limited spots are available.
- Only successful applicants will be notified.
- Successful applicants will receive an agreement valid for the quarter along with the performance dates, times, and their allocated location within the Markets.
Performance Setup
- Provided by The Rocks Markets:
- A 2.4m x 2.4m shade structure.
- An A4 sign stand (portrait orientation) for promotional signage.
- Provided by the Musician:
- Battery-powered audio equipment.
- Any additional performance materials.
- Additional Benefits:
- One parking permit.
- One meal voucher per performance day.
A cancellation/no-show policy will be outlined in the confirmation email for successful applicants. Consistent communication is expected to ensure smooth scheduling and program management. In the event of inclement weather buskers will be relocated or cancelled. The Rocks Markets is an all-weather market. The Rocks Markets team will make the call on the day for inclement weather and cancellations.
The sound levels from a performance shall at no time disrupt business trading including retail or dining establishments, affect workplace performance or detract from residential or public amenity. Levels measured for one minute at three metres - 82dBA L10. Levels measured for one minute at six meters - 76dBA L10
Promotion and Filming Rights
Promotion and Filming Rights
- The busker shall seek prior approval from PMNSW for any filming or media coverage of the Performance.
- The busker grants to PMNSW the right to record, in any manner, and without limitation, excerpts from or all of the Performance for promotional, news or archival purposes, to be used at the discretion of PMNSW at any time in the future as many times as PMNSW may determine, without further payment.
- The busker will provide PMNSW with press material (release/s and photo/s) within three days of receiving a request from PMNSW.
- Upon reasonable request, the Performer will be available for interviews and other publicity activities relating to the Performance.

1. Performance Standards
Performers are responsible for any damage, injury, or loss arising from their activities. Performers must indemnify PMNSW against any expense, loss, or liability resulting from their actions.
5. Events and Site Availability
- Monetary Appreciation: Performers may accept voluntary contributions but must not solicit funds in a manner that could cause discomfort. No specific amount for contributions may be suggested.
- Presentation: Performers must ensure their pitch is clean, tidy, and free from rubbish during and after their performance. They must restore the site to its original condition after use.
- Equipment and Fixtures: Attaching cables, wires, ropes, or other materials to railings, light poles, seats, or permanent fixtures is prohibited.
- Performers must perform within the allocated space and not spill outside of this, or obstruct pedestrian flow or traders.
- Performances must not compromise public safety or amenity.
- Performers must avoid excessive noise, offensive language, or anti-social behaviour.
- Material that is political, religious, racial, sexually explicit, or homophobic is strictly prohibited and must comply with the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
- Performances must adhere to a standard that respects the diverse audience of The Rocks Markets.

5. Events and Site Availability
- Busking pitches may be closed, relocated, or have operating hours adjusted during activities at The Rocks Market.
- Performers will be notified of changes to pitch availability whenever possible.
