Map, showing Cadman’s Cottage

Cadman’s Cottage, a jewel in the heart of The Rocks, stands as a captivating window into Sydney’s colonial past. As the second oldest residential building in the city, and a rare survivor from the first three decades of European settlement, its historical significance is profound.

From Waterfront Home to Historic Landmark

This intriguing building was constructed in 1816 as part of the new government dockyard to serve as a home for four government coxswains (sailors who steer ships). At the time the cottage was absolute waterfront, with a front door that opened onto the harbour and a small beach - but today it stands 100 metres away from the shoreline after reclamations of the foreshore.

Beyond its original purpose, Cadman’s Cottage has witnessed a rich tapestry of uses. Since its construction it has also served as the headquarters of the Sydney Water Police (1845-1864) and a welcoming sailor’s home (1865-1970) before being proclaimed as a heritage site and restored in 1972.

Where to find Cadman's Cottage

Cadman's Cottage is a beautiful slice of Sydney History which you can see today. You'll find it just a short walk from the Museum of Contempory Art, directly across from the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

Looking to the Future: Conservation and Consideration

Placemaking NSW (PMNSW) are currently carrying out conservations works on the site. Following the completion of these works, PMNSW will consider suitable uses for the premises that are inclusive and representative of the cultural and historical significance of the site.
