About Ngumpie Weaving
Founded by Tegan Murray, Ngumpie Weaving is a weaving business dedicated to sharing the rich cultural heritage of traditional Indigenous weaving techniques with a modern twist. Founded with a passion for creativity and cultural preservation, Ngumpie Weaving offers handmade products and engaging workshops designed to inspire and educate.
As a proud member of the Barkindji tribe, with ancestral ties to the Coomealla, Lake Victoria, and Mungo regions through her mother, and a deep connection to the Yorta Yorta and Duduroa tribes of Shepparton and Wodonga through her father, weaving is not just an art form for Tegan—it is a way to honour and celebrate her heritage.
Tegan's journey into weaving began with her beautiful Mum, Margaret, who taught her this traditional practice several years ago. What started with weaving earrings soon evolved into a creative exploration, leading her to craft unique jewellery pieces and intricate wall art. Each piece created is a reflection of her culture, inspiration, and storytelling.
Ngumpie Weaving is more than just a business; it is a platform for cultural connection and education. Tegan teaches others the art of weaving, fostering understanding and appreciation for Indigenous traditions. Her mission is clear: "I want to use my weaving to break down barriers." By sharing her skills and heritage, she hopes to create meaningful connections and a deeper appreciation for Indigenous craftsmanship.
